Check the world status first
Check the status bar at the bottom of the play page. Online means the game responded, not that your account has been checked. If you still cannot sign in, use the steps below. Unknown means the status could not be checked; try the refresh button.
If the world is Offline or under Maintenance, wait before trying again. News and help remain available. Reinstalling will not bring the world back.
If the world is online but you cannot connect
- Launch MapleTime from the Start menu rather than an old shortcut.
- Allow the game through your firewall if you blocked it on first launch.
- Reinstall over the top. Your display settings are preserved.
- Check the news page before changing router or antivirus settings.
Change the game window
The game opens full screen. Press Alt+Enter to switch to a window, and again
to return to full screen; the next start opens the way you left it. Pick a size
in System Option in game, from 800x600 up to 1600x900; the default is
1366x768. A larger size saved by an older client opens at 1600x900. In a
window on a large display, the game grows by whole steps and drops its frame
when the framed window would not fit, so 1280x720 fills a 2560x1440 display
at exactly double size.
The installer writes config.ini next to the game. To change how the game is
drawn, edit only these values:
window=auto
scale=auto
filter=smooth
vsync=off
fullscreen=on
Set window=framed to always keep the frame, scale=1 to show the game at its
own size, or scale=fit to fill the display at any size. filter=sharp keeps
every game pixel a crisp block instead of rounding the edges of enlarged pixel
art, vsync=on removes tearing, and fullscreen=off starts in a window until
you press Alt+Enter. Leave the other settings alone unless a maintained guide
says otherwise.
Your settings survive updates. Reinstalling does not overwrite them, and the
original defaults remain beside them in MapleTime.defaults.ini, which also
lists settings added since your config.ini was written. Updating to 1.6.18
moves settings still at an older release’s defaults to the new ones once, and
keeps the ones you changed. Updating from 1.5 replaces the old settings file,
which the current client cannot read.
Stay logged in
Check Save ID on the login screen. After a login goes through, the client
also remembers your password, encrypted for your Windows account and kept only
on this PC, and fills it in next time, so logging in takes one press of Enter,
or of X on a controller. A wrong password, or logging in with Save ID
unchecked, forgets it. To never remember it, set save_password=off in
config.ini.
Play with a controller
An XInput controller, such as an Xbox controller, a ROG Ally, or a Steam Deck, plays while the game window has focus. A PlayStation controller works through Steam or DS4Windows, which present it as an Xbox controller. The layout follows MapleStory Classic World’s:
- The left stick moves. A jumps, Y attacks, X confirms dialogs or talks to the nearest NPC, and B cancels.
- LB sits and RB picks up items.
- The D-pad opens Equipment, Item, Skill, and Ability.
- Back opens Short Cut, and Start opens the Game Menu.
- The right stick moves the cursor, and pressing it clicks.
Hold LT and press the D-pad for the World Map, Maker, Key Config, and Quest. In
Keyboard Settings, put your MP and HP potions on the End and Delete quick slots
to drink them with Y and X, and the Maker skill on N. Hold RT and press the
D-pad for the Cash Shop, Buddy, Party, and Change Channel. A still jumps while
a trigger is held.
To rebind a button, edit the [gamepad] section of config.ini, copying it
from MapleTime.defaults.ini if it is missing. stick_sensitivity, from 1 to
100, sets the cursor speed, and gamepad=off ignores controllers.
If the installer itself will not run
Return to the official play page and compare the file’s SHA-256 with the value beside the download. A matching checksum proves file identity, not malware-freedom. Do not disable antivirus protection or create exclusions.
Report a reproducible problem
Record the time, your character, job and level, the map or NPC, what you did,
what you expected, and what actually happened. Use @reportbug in game.
Never share passwords, PINs, PICs, recovery links, or personal account, network, or device details. Keep screenshots limited to the problem itself.
